Frequently asked questions

How do I start tracking an activity?

Open the app to the map and tap Start Activity. Give it a name and choose an activity type (or let it auto-name), then head out. Tap End Activity when you're done — only you can end your own activity.

Do I need an account?

No. You can use Whereabouts as a guest. You can also sign in with email, Google, or Apple to keep your activity history across devices.

How does sharing work?

While an activity is running you can share it via a link using your phone's share sheet. Anyone with the link can watch the live track in their browser — no account needed. The link works while the activity is live and for 24 hours after it ends, and you can revoke it at any time.

Why does the app need background location?

So your track keeps recording when your screen is off or the app is in the background during an active activity. Location is never collected when you are not in an activity. You can change how often location is recorded in Settings.

It says location is unavailable or my track has gaps.

Make sure location permission is set to Always (or "While Using" with background enabled) in your device settings, and that battery optimization isn't killing the app. In areas with no signal, points are queued on your device and uploaded automatically once you're back online.

How do I join a group activity?

Open the group invite link you were sent. After signing in (or continuing as a guest where supported), you'll join the activity and can see every participant's live location on the map.

Deleting your account & data

You can request deletion of your Whereabouts account and all associated data (activities and location tracks) at any time:

  • Email support@walabs.net from the address associated with your account with the subject "Delete my account", or
  • Use the account deletion option in the app's Settings where available.

We will permanently delete your account and associated personal data. If you used the app as a guest, clearing the app's data or uninstalling it removes the guest data stored on your device.
